Cavity wall insulation is a type of insulation that is inserted into the gap between the brickwork exterior and the brickwork interior of a property. Holes are drilled into the exterior wall in specific locations to create an injection pattern.
This pattern makes sure that the gap between the walls are filled and heat loss is prevented.
Cavity walls were built from the 1920’s onwards, they can be identified by being wider than a traditional solid brick wall. The real test is to drill and use a boroscope to check. During the 1970’s cavity wall insulation was introduced and in the 1990’s it became compulsory by building control.
Filling cavity walls with insulation will raise your energy performance certificate’s band, save you money on your heating bill (up to £550 per year) and will keep you warmer during those cold months by reducing heat loss by up to 33%.
IWI can last up to a building’s lifetime. However, it always comes with a 25 year guarantee. Special training is required to prevent any cold spots by ensuring a full fill.
To insulate a home, a survey of the house takes place to determine the injection pattern (created to ensure that the gap is completely filled evenly). Once completed, small holes are drilled into the exterior walls and the insulation is inserted via a gun. The mortar is then replaced to ensure no moisture can enter.
It takes a day to install.
